They have won only one Super Bowl where they beat the New York Giants in 2000.
How The Team Came To Be
The team have a rather interesting history. There was originally a football team in Cleveland called the Cleveland Browns. Their owner was Art Modell who found the Cleveland Stadium inadequate for his team. He decided to move the team. But due to legal issues, it was decided that the original name of the Cleveland Brown team would remain in Cleveland. The Football Hall of Fame players would also be retained with the Cleveland Brown team.
Art Modell then decided to move to Baltimore and start his new club there. He retained most of the original players and personnel. He then hired a head coach for his new team, Ted Marchibroda who had earlier been associated with the Baltimore Colts and the Indianapolis Colts.
The way the name of the new club was chosen is interesting. There were focus groups, telephone surveys and a fan contest. On the basis of these, the possible names were reduced from 100 to 3 to the final one, Ravens. Hence the Baltimore team came into being in 1996.
The initial home field of the team was the Memorial Stadium, but after 2 years it was moved to the Ravens Stadium which came to be known as PSINet Stadium and presently is known as the M&T Bank Stadium. Their first ever regular season game was played at Memorial Stadium on 1st September, 1996 where they beat the Oakland Raiders 19-14.
Major Championship Wins
The team won a few championships in their rather short history. They won the AFC Championships in 2001 beating the Oakland Raiders. They also beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the AFC North Championships in 2003. They beat them again to win it in 2006. Their biggest win of course was the Super Bowl in 2001 where they defeated the New York Giants 34-7. Since then till date, they have yet to win another championship.
The Current Team
The current team is owned by Steve Bisciotti who took over from Art Modell in 2003. Their head coach is Brian Billick, who incidentally was their coach when they won the Super Bowl. The team colors are purple, black and gold.
The team has a Ring of Honor which circles the M&T Bank Stadium. This honors some Hall of Fame players like Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore and Ted Hendricks. Art Modell was also inducted into the Ravens Ring of Honor in 2003. |
