IIn 1963, he moved the team to Kansas where they got their current name
In the beginning, as the Dallas Texans, Hunts team had to share the Cotton Bowl Stadium with the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL from 1960 to 1962. When they moved to their new home as the Chiefs their home field was the Municipal Stadium, which was eventually demolished. Currently they play at the Arrowhead Stadium which has been their home ground since 1972.
The Chiefs Success Story
As the Dallas Texans, they won the AFL Championship in 1962 defeating the Houston Oilers in a tense game which went into double overtime. Once they moved to Kansas and became the Chiefs, they had even more wins to their credit.
Under the guidance of head coach Hank Stram, they played their first Super Bowl, where they lost unfortunately to the Green Bay Packers in 1966. The Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl three years later when they beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. In Stram’s tenure, the Chiefs won 43 games in the years 1966 to 1969.
In 1971, the Chiefs won the AFC West title. But after that they lost in what was known as “the longest game” to the Miami Dolphins in the playoffs. This also happened to be their last game at the Municipal Stadium. After this the Chiefs did not make it back to the playoffs for fifteen years. The state of the team got worse over the years and Hank Stram left as coach in 1974.
Eventually, in 1989 Carl Peterson took over as the President of the Chiefs and hired Marty Schottenheimer as the Head Coach. Marty proved to be just what the team needed. He took them to six playoff appearances in a row and got them three AFC West Championships. Thanks to Marty, the Chiefs regained their lost popularity and honor. He resigned in 1998 though after the Chiefs suffered a not so successful season, citing his own inability to provide the team the coaching they needed because of his conservative style.
The Chiefs ended their 2006 season with a record of 9-7 and are looking to improve upon it in the current season. |
