A move to Santa Clara is being considered for the new home of the team, as the current location of the 49ers is in San Francisco.
The 49ers played their home games at Kezar Stadium from 1946 to 1970. The team moved to Candlestick Park in 1971, which was at the outskirts but provided better facilities. This field was also known as 3Com Park and San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point. It is currently known as Monster Park.
The League Championships
The 49ers was the first team to win the Super Bowl five times. Two other teams achieved this feat later, the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 49ers are known as the only team to win every Super Bowl they played in. The best part is that they never won any NFL Championship.
Under head Coach Bill Walsh, the 49ers reached their first Super Bowl in 1981. They were up against the Cincinnati Bengals who were in their first one as well. The 49ers won the game with a score of 26-21.
The 49ers reached their second Super Bowl in 1984 and beat the Miami Dolphins, 38-16. Super Bowl number three came in 1998 where they faced the Cincinnati Bengals and beat them again. Bill Walsh retired the following season and George Seifert took over as head coach. Under him, the team reached their fourth Super Bowl in 1989. This Super Bowl holds the record for the largest win margin of 55-10 against the Denver Broncos. With this win, the 49ers also became the first team to win two Super Bowls in a row under different head coaches.
Their fifth Super Bowl was in 1994, the first to have both teams from California. They played against the San Diego Chargers and after defeating them, became the first team to win a total of five Super Bowls. Steve Young was named the Most Valuable Player with a record six touchdown passes.
The team is owned by Denise DeBartolo York and John York. The head coach since 2005 is Mike Nolan.
The 49ers have retired a few jersey numbers such as Steve Young #8, Joe Perry #34, Jerry Rice #80 and Joe Montana #16. Their Pro Football Hall of Fame includes Joe Perry, O.J.Simpson, Steve Young and Coach Bill Walsh. |
